How do we know a glass road stud is painted or self-colored?
2018/6/25
The other day we received a lot of YELLOW glass road studs of other brands from our customers. According to our investigation, YELLOW glass road studs of other brands are all PAINTED (cover the bottom of transparent glass road studs with paint or other coloring material); none of them is SELF-COLORED (add pigment while the glass is melted to make it colored). In other words, they all conflict with the “self-colored” requirement of CNS13762.
The testing process is as follows:
1. Equipment: 1-liter beaker, stir stick,heating device
2. Testing process: each sample shall complete the following steps A, B, and C.
A. Place the sample on white paper, take photo from the top of the sample, and be sure the trade mark is clearly shown. - Pour 200c.c. of acetone in the 1-liter beaker
- Place the sample in the beaker, with one side sunk in the acetone for 24 hours.
- Take out the sample, rinse with water, and place the sample again on white paper, takephoto from the top of the sample, and be sure the trademark is clearly shown.
B. Put 100g of NaOH and 100c.c. of water in a 1-liter beaker, and stir them well - Place the sample in the beaker, with one side sunk in the NaOH solution for 24 hours.
- Take out the sample, rinse with water, and place the sample on white paper, takephoto from the top of the sample, and be sure the trademark is clearly shown.
C. Pour 200c.c. of concentrated hydrochloric acid (36%~38%) in the 1-liter beaker and heat to 80 degrees Celsius. - Place the sample in the beaker, with one side sunk in the heated hydrochloric acid for 24 hours.
- Take out the sample, rinse with water, and place the sample on white paper, takephoto from the top of the sample, and be sure the trademark is clearly shown.
◎ Our test results and photos are as follows: 1. S brand from China
(before test)(after test)
2. Star logo from China
(before test)(after test)
From the photos above, it is clear that both S-brand and Star-logo YELLOW glass road studs are PAINTED (cover the bottom of transparent glass road studs with paint or other coloring material) ones and could not meet the “self-colored” requirement from CNS13762.
(Made-in-China PAINTED YELLOW glass road studs)
Per our experience and feedback from our customers worldwide, the color and the reflective layer of the said PAINTED YELLOW glass road studs would fade in 6 to 12 months due to exposure to ultraviolet light from the Sun. When the fading occurs, the glass road could lose its color, even its reflectivity. And the traffic safety would be seriously affected.
